OUR STORY

WOCLIF School of Health Technology is a private health training institution established in 2019 by the Women & Community Livelihood Foundation (WOCLIF) to train middle-level health workers. Located in Mbioto 1, Etinan LGA, Akwa Ibom State, it holds the distinction of being the first private school of health technology in the state.

For more than a decade before the school was established, WOCLIF as an NGO has been working in rural communities of Akwa Ibom state, focusing on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and providing care and support for orphans and vulnerable children. Much of this work relied on community volunteers who were trained for specific project activities but were not licensed health professionals. During health outreaches, these volunteers were often mistaken for qualified health workers, and community members requested treatment for illnesses outside their scope. At the same time, WOCLIF observed unqualified individuals posing as healthcare providers, sometimes administering injections within villages.

These experiences highlighted the urgent need for trained and skilled health professionals in rural communities. In 2018, WOCLIF carried out a community-based study with 70 trained volunteers to assess how rural dwellers accessed healthcare. The study revealed that many people relied heavily on unqualified providers, which placed their health at risk. The findings emphasised the need for an institution that could train competent health workers to complement government efforts and ensure fair access to healthcare for everyone.

In response, WOCLIF School of Health Technology was officially established in 2019 and registered under RC1590712. The school began with training programs for Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs). Its pioneer students were indexed, trained, and later sat for the national licensing examination in 2022.

Since then, the institution has worked to expand its academic offerings. Today, it is accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to run National Diploma programs in Public Health Technology, Epidemiology and Disease Control, Environmental Health Technology, and Community Health program. The school has also set up a research centre to support studies in public health and to contribute to solutions that improve community health outcomes.

WOCLIF School of Health Technology remains committed to training skilled professionals who can meet the health needs of communities, strengthen the healthcare system, and make quality care more accessible, especially in underserved rural areas.
